Camping With Kids

by mpucalik 11. January 2013 20:29

“RVing is nothing if not kid-friendly. Think of all the “extras” sported by recreation vehicles. Comfortable beds. Fully stocked, on-board snack center. The kids’ favorite toys, games, books and videos – all within arm’s reach. And because of these comforts, there are certain things you’ll be able to do without – like the sound of “Are we there yet?” Check out some of the on-the-road games to make travel time more fun.

The nation’s commercial campgrounds and resorts catering to RV travelers feel like small, friendly towns. Your children will find plenty of other children eager to make friends. And in a safe environment, you’ll feel comfortable letting them explore the campground where they’ll find amenities and activities galore, like mini-golf, arts and crafts, swimming, movies under the stars and organized kids programs.

Kids Love to Help. Get them involved in preparing for the trip by following the basic packing list under What to Bring. Have them add their personal favorites so everyone will arrive at the final destination with their most prized and important possessions.

Thrilling Rides. Take a trip to an amusement park. Most parks allow you to exit during the day, and you can head to the RV for a refreshing lunch away from the crowds, saving money and empty calories of typical restaurant meals. Best of all, the kids will have their own beds to collapse in after a long, exciting day.

Panoramic Drives. Head out on one of the many National Scenic Byways. Travel in style and comfort, while taking time to enjoy some of the country’s best scenery through large picture windows. Be sure to make stops at scenic overlooks and plan to have a picnic at one of the breathtaking sites along the way.

Be Starstruck. Take your RV to the next solar or lunar eclipse or meteor shower. Head outside the city limits to where the sky is clear of ambient light, get a blanket, sit outside your RV, listen to your favorite tunes and enjoy the sky show. And when the show’s over, tuck the kids into their own beds.

A Classroom on Wheels. The number of historical sites, national monuments, museums, art galleries and cultural festivals in the U.S. is endless. Your RV allows you to experience it all without ever feeling like you’ve left the comforts of home behind. And who said learning had to be boring? RVs help make everyday excursions more exciting and special events, moments to be remembered. Best of all, with kids, they’ll just think they’re having fun.”

RV Sweet RV For The Holidays

by campersinn 6. December 2012 18:55
Living in your RV over the holidays will present a few unique challenges, but will also be amazingly rewarding. Here are a few tips to help you weather the challenges of the holidays in your RV.

Overcoming the Space Challenge
One of the greatest challenges of an RV is the limited space. During the holidays, with all of the shopping and gift giving, the space can seem even more limited. When you plan what gifts to give, you may want to choose items that are easy to store in the space that you have. This means purchasing smaller gifts.
Many stores have options for shipping directly from the store. This is a great option for RVers since it doesn't require any storage. Online shopping is one of the best ways to take advantage of direct shipping. You can also make your purchases and then take them directly to mail them in order to avoid using space in your RV.
In addition, you may not have space to store the supplies you need to do all of your gift wrapping. You would need wrapping paper, ribbon, tape and other items in order to wrap all of your gifts. However, if you do not have space for these items, you can take advantage of the gift wrapping options that many stores offer. Even if you need to store these wrapped gifts, you won't have to store all of the items for gift wrapping.

Decorate Your RV For The Holidays
When RVing over the holidays you will also have issues with limited storage for decorations. If you celebrate Christmas, you won't have room for a full sized tree. You may find that some of the traditions you celebrate in your home may not be possible in your RV. However, there are many options for modifying your holiday traditions to make it as much fun as you normally have at home.
To make it feel more like the holidays, you can decorate the exterior and interior of your RV. Lights are a great option. They are fairly simple to store and find wherever you might be. Lights are also a great way to make your RV feel like the holidays. You can also find garland and other items to spruce up your RV for the holidays.
If you really enjoy having a decorated tree, you can find a small tree to place on your table top. You can find a small live tree, which you could find a place to plant after the holidays are over. You could also find a small shrub-like plant that you have room for in your RV throughout the year that you can decorate for the holidays as a replacement for the full-sized tree.

Gifts For RVers
Another aspect to consider when RVing for the holidays is the purchasing of gifts for other RVers. If you are purchasing for a fellow RVer, you may already know what types of items might be most useful which can make great gifts. If you are not an RVer but are purchasing for an RVer, you may want to remember when purchasing a gift that RVs have limited space. Gifts should be small or have a space saving purpose, or be a type of RV gear. If you want to give a type of RV gear to an experieced RVer, you will probably want to be sure that you have the correct type of item. Gift cards are also excellent options to give to RVers since they leave many options open for satisfying all types of needs.
The holidays always present some special challenges, especially for those who spend the holidays in an RV -- but the rewards are great and many. Make the most of your holiday by celebrating with family and friends, new and old. And always remember how blessed you are to be able to live (even if for just a few weeks) the RV lifestyle.

Road Royalty #23

by mpucalik 18. April 2012 18:24

Road Royalty #23

When is an RV more than an RV? Over the years, I have concluded that the answer is this: Constantly.

It is a home, a comfort, a means of transit, a safe haven, a movie screen playing an ever-changing American reel. At times it is a source of a pride, a symbol of adventure, a conversation starter, a plot device, an inspiration.

But I have also found it to be… a measuring stick. And I mean that almost literally.

Along a crowded city street or in a suburban neighborhood, a big RV can feel… large. For some reason, a house on wheels conveys an outsized vibe when it’s parked next to an actual house. But next to a massive natural marvel, an RV can seem small. More important, it can be a means of truly appreciating the scope of the wonder you’re visiting.

I have photos of a 30-something foot RV in front of Utah’s grand sandstone arches and amid New Mexico’s sprawling White Sands and alongside South Dakota’s far-reaching Badlands and in the foreground of Montana’s snow-capped peaks. Always, it generates an appreciation for comparative size. And it makes for a great picture.

So here’s another installment of Road Royalty – the RV in Redwood National Park.

Reel Road Trips

by mpucalik 18. April 2012 18:18

Reel Road Trips

With the Academy Awards now in our rearview mirror, I offer a trivia question: What do Robert DeNiro, Jack Nicholson, Robin Williams and Albert Brooks have in common?

Answer: They’ve all driven RVs, of course.

Hollywood has a long history of making motor homes and trailers part of the silver screen story – from Lucy and Desi in “The Long, Long Trailer” to Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl in “The Incredibles.” There have been comedies (“Borat”), thrillers (“2012”), dramas (“What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”), even a whole bunch of horror films with titles like “Dead and Breakfast” and “Troll 2.”

Why the RV? Well, maybe it’s because it offers an opportunity for dramatic setting – and an ever-changing one at that. That’s the whole point. The massive windshield is like a camera lens pointed at the nation’s most remarkable scenery. The driver is the cinematographer, who also gets to be the star.

Perhaps it’s because the vehicle becomes so integral to the journey that it becomes a character itself. It is more than a means to an end. It’s a carefully chosen means, selected or adapted to fully realize the road trip experience. In that sense, RVers are a bit like casting directors. Even if you think of it as just another way to move the plot – and the stars of the film – from Point A to Point B, it’s a heck of a good plot device.

So RVs have a long and varied film career. They have even played bit parts in movies ranging from “Rambo” to “The Jerk.” But in many films, a house on wheels has played a more significant role. In fact, here is a list of 100 movies featuring houses on wheels:

Amy and Tracy from 98 square feet are back!

Have You Missed Us?

Hey everybody!

We know you haven’t heard from The Happy Campers in a while, but we’ve been hunkered down in Florida escaping the cold and the snow.  We know it was a mild winter, and trust us, we’re very happy about that because it kept our average temperature between 70-80 degrees down here.  Yeah, it’s been a real hardship!! We’re heading North soon, so we figured this was a good opportunity to give a quick update on what we’ve been up to.

First, a friend of ours had these awesome 98 square feet t-shirts made for us!  They are so adorable, and if you look closely (or enlarge the picture), we're in the windows on the shirt with pigtails....so cute!  Thanks JK - we LOVE them!

Going back a while - we had a lovely holiday season – spending it right on the Atlantic Ocean in Palm Coast (just north of Daytona).  We managed to cook up a 5 course meal and a delicious turkey on our tiny grill for Thanksgiving.   Seriously, it was delicious and we think we’ll make turkey like that every year!!

Yes, this tiny grill made a
very yummy turkey!

For Christmas and New Year’s we enjoyed sunny skies and an amazing sunrise to start 2012!  We’re not sure anything can top 2011, but it sure was a great way to start off the New Year!

Jan 1, 2012
Sunrise from our camper

We toured through Daytona a few times – honestly, it’s nothing to write home about.  It’s a bit run down, but it was cool to see the Daytona Speedway and take a drive on the beach!

Little Miss Jeep
on the beach!

For the months of January - March, we moved to a campground in central Florida.   We decided the price was right (ie: cheap!), and it would allow us to focus on whipping ourselves into shape and working on a plan for our next adventure.  So honestly, our lives haven’t been overly exciting!  We actually fell into a little monotonous routine which played out kinda like this:

Monday:  Bachelor night and texting with Bobbie Lu.  Yes, we had many good laughs on Mondays while killing off brain cells watching Ben and Courtney find true love!  Sample text messages went something like this:
A&T:  “Not sure how we recall anything given our brain cell reduction”
Bobbie Lu:  “I have to speak intelligently tomorrow.  Not sure I can pull that off after 3 hours of this shit”
A&T: “Courtney basically lied through her teeth about the other girls”
Bobbie Lu: “She did lie. It’s all for drama.  All I know is I want to go to Switzerland.  Damn”
A&T: “I know, doesn’t it look amazing?  We have no brain cells left”
Bobbie Lu: “We will never get this time of our life back.  IQ dropping rapidly”
Oh dear lord, Mondays have never been so entertaining!  Thanks, Bobbie Lu, for filling our Monday nights with so much laughter these past couple of months!  But please don’t make us watch The Bachelorette!

Yes, we even text messaged each other tabloid
pictures while out shopping!  Major Dorks!

Tuesday:  Tracy plays Bingo!  Yes, Bingo.  And I won $92 one night!  Woot woot!  But the best part was the giant Armadillo that jumped out and scared me to death on the walk back to the camper!  Yes, good times, good times!

Yes, proof of the winnings,
but wish I had a shot of
the Armadillo

Wednesday:  It’s Soup day!  Yes, we all converge in the Club House at noon to eat homemade soup. Yummy!

We didn't have a soup picture, but here's
a shot of our ice cream social - pretty
much the same!

Thursday:  Amy goes to Crafting Club!  She’s made a bunch of great things and started her Etsy Store.  You can check out her stuff using the link below!

Amy's Store - Chapter Two Creations

Friday:  Library on Wheels shows up!  This rocks!  We’ve checked out so many books, movies, magazines, music, etc.  And it’s all free.  It’s been awesome!  We wish we could bring it with us!

Such a great perk!

Saturday:  After all the weeks’ excitement, it’s time to hit the pool and relax!

Working on our tans!

Sunday:  While everyone seems to scoot off to church, we do our interval training workout on the grand lawn and crank our music!  We’re sure they think we’re nuts! (That's ok, we're fairly confident they are, too) Or we hit the gym and pump the iron!  Ok, we do this more than just Sundays, but it's the best day to actually see people our own age!

Tracy's personal best to date
35lb weights! Go baby!

Ok, so we certainly have done more than just the above, but we thought it would be fun to give you a flavor of what happens when you hole up with the Snow Birds (ie: elders) down here in Florida at an RV Park out in the sticks!  Some other exciting things have been:

A giant Rat Snake crawled up the tree just outside our camper – we didn’t like that so much!

The yucky snake!

We hosted a Happy Hour and shared scrumptious Jelly Shots with all our new friends!  Yes, seniors can put some jelly shots away!

Ok, we forgot to take a pic of
the actual shots, but we
got the shot of the alcohol

There are LOTS of dogs, but our two favorites have been Charlie and Bonnie - so cute!

Charlie
So adorable and comes by for
chicken at night! Spoiled!!

Bonnie
Only a face a mother could love -
along with Amy!

Amy’s parents came down and spent February at The Villages – which is a massive golf cart retirement community.  Everyone drives really cool looking golf carts around.  Amy is convinced we’re buying a retirement home there the second I turn 55!  It’s very neat, but WAY too hot to be here in the summer!

Happy Hour in the Square with
Wil and Joyce
One of the cool golf carts
that cruises the Villages!

We discovered (and are addicted to) a show called “Storage Wars” where people buy abandoned storage units.  There’s a good chance we may just take our own Storage unit and sell it to the highest bidder when we get home in April!! Yuuuuuup!

So much fun to watch these people try to screw each other!

And best of all, we landed an amazing Work Kamp gig on Cape Cod this summer!  We’re super excited to spend the summer in New England, and we certainly can’t complain about being on Cape Cod!!  Hopefully we'll have some visitors (hint, hint friends & family) and can take in some Sox games!

Cape Camp or bust...check it out!

I think there’s only one additional thing, as we mentioned, we’ll be in Maine for the month of April.  We’re leaving the warm weather behind (and the annoying caterpillars that make you itch like hell if they touch you) and heading home to tie up some loose ends and visit with friends and family before having to report to the Cape on May 1!   We look forward to seeing many of you very soon!

This is our annoying Caterpillar
Besides being our Bachelor Buddy, Bobbie Lu
has also been our animal consultant. She
identified it as a Tussock Moth Caterpillar.
Then she told us to get the hell outta here and get home!
Ok, Bobbie - we're coming!!

Until the next exit…
Amy & Tracy

10 Movie Characters You’d Love to Go RVing With

by CarInsuranceQuotes.net Staff Writer on March 16, 2012

Imagine sharing an RV with Clark Griswold, Del Griffith, John Rambo, and a young Che Guevara while traveling across country. Sound appealing? It might for a generation who grew up on Vacation, Plans, Trains & Automobiles, First Blood, and The Motorcycle Diaries, and daydreamed about participating in shows like Road Rules and The Real World. Sure, the characters may stop being polite, but hey, things will never start getting real because, well, this is just a fantasy. Here are 10 movie characters (11, actually), provided they'd all fit into an RV, with whom we would like to imagine going on a long, strange trip.

The Driver, Drive

He isn't much of a talker and he doesn't have the most effervescent personality, but he is a real hero and a real human being. More importantly, he loves to do one thing — drive. Highly skilled at his craft, he could evade an overzealous state trooper in any condition, even in a 12,000-pound vehicle. He's intensely focused, and certainly isn't afraid to ignore the speed limit if it means reaching his destination in a quick manner.

John Rambo, First Blood

Again, not the most effervescent personality, but you need someone to deal with potential road rage incidents when your driver is as aggressive as The Driver. Plus, if you're ever stranded in the middle of nowhere, John will have all the tools necessary for survival and will undoubtedly protect you and your group from cops intent on throwing a motley group of out-of-towners in jail.

Clark Griswold, Vacation

Every cross country excursion needs a leader, and Clark has been the architect of multiple vacation adventures. He'd be a good addition not because he's a particularly good manager, but because chaos always seems to find him. You'll be sure to remember a trip in which you endure gunshots, a gnarly trip through the ghetto, and money-hungry hillbillies.

Ernesto Guevara, The Motorcycle Diaries

Depending on your personal political philosophy, you may think of Che Guevara as a murderous thug, or you may think of him as a hero. Regardless, based on Motorcycle Diaries, you can deduct that he makes an awesome travel companion. As an ambitious, fun-seeking youth, he traversed Latin America and developed his Marxist beliefs along the way as he witnessed the large division between the "haves" and "have nots." Executive producer Paul Webster compared this version of Guevara to Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady, who are certainly more fun than your stereotypical militant revolutionary.

Chris McCandless (aka Alexander Supertramp), Into the Wild

Yes, it's based on a true story. And no, it didn't end well for Chris. But you have to admire his adventurous spirit and self-sufficiency, which was impressive for a recent college graduate who grew up in the D.C. burbs. Inspired by writers such as Kerouac, Chris embarked on a journey to Alaska and spiritual realization, escaping the monotony of so-called responsibility and adulthood, things we'd certainly be avoiding on this trip.

Christina, Vicky Christina Barcelona

Forget, Vicky. Let's invite Christina, the free-spirited, more spontaneous of the pair of friends who spent a summer in Barcelona. Her consent to joining a polyamorous relationship with the Spaniard with whom she and Vicky had trysts would probably go over well in an RV full of men, whom she'd hopefully be able to corral. Her best trait is that she's a good friend, as evidenced by her acceptance of Vicki after she admitted to sleeping with the Spaniard when Christina was more interested in pursuing him.

Del Griffith, Plains, Trains & Automobiles

When you're traveling with guys like The Driver, John Rambo, and the perpetually stressed out Clark Griswold, you need genuinely good people who can lighten the mood. Del fits the bill, and his own words to his cold travel companion, Neal Page, in Plains, Trains & Automobiles prove it: "Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you … but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing." And, in the end, even if he isn't the 100% "real article," you'd have a lifelong friend.

Thelma & Louis, Thelma & Louis

If the group plans to head to Mexico, Thelma and Louis can provide the directions — just don't trust them with the group's cash. Both have an axe to grind with truck drivers, so the more aggressive ones who refuse to share the road with an RV will be sorry. But if the group breaks a law or two, watch out, because things can spiral out of control quickly. The last thing you want is for the trip to end at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Edward Cole, Bucket List

Vacations aren't cheap, especially in RVs — have you seen gas prices lately? Edward, of course, financed an elaborate excursion around the world with his new friend, who was also dying from lung cancer, to accomplish each item on their buckets lists. Their activities included riding motorcycles on the Great Wall of China, seeing the Taj Mahal, and skydiving. While such a trip would be difficult to duplicate in an RV, it should be noted that there are many, many fun and pricy things to experience in the old U.S. of A.

Richard, The Beach

For one, Richard knows how to follow a map, which would come in handy when the outdated GPS system becomes sluggish. He can also kill a mako shark with a harpoon, a skill that would come in handy during those beach stops. And, if any of the travelers were to become severely injured or fall ill, he would have the strength to mercy kill them to end the agony (and get rid of the weak link).
