Rollercoasters, Hills, Music and...Prison?!

"Not all those who wander are lost"
- JRR Tolkien

A very true quote....unless however you've been in the car with us over the last few weeks. We've had an incredible knack for getting lost lately despite modern-day conveniences such as the mapquest app on my iphone AND having a library full of good ol' fashioned maps in the car! Regardless, it is all part of the journey...

While 98 square feet has been parked in one location for 20 days now,WE certainly haven't been. Since our last post we've beem to Monterey, Carmel, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Jose, Saratoga, Cupertino, Los Gatos and Alcatraz Island!

Santa Cruz
We had a blast playing on the Santa Cruz pier with T's cousin, Curt, and his daughters -  Britney and Amber.  A day of crazy rides, mini-golf and piggybacks...we were amazed at how much food small children can consume and how exhausted we were when we got home!

We also conducted an "interview" with Britney - so be sure to check it out: http://youtu.be/j576WnL4ZeU

Tracy & Britney ready for take-off

Tracy & Amber ride the horses

Amy & Amber take on the wild dragon!

Splashdown - Curt discovers riding alone
actually gets you MORE wet!

Tracy & Amber go for a drive!

Monterey
Beautiful wharf with lots of wildlife and we hit it just right by showing up at lunch time since all the restaurants offer free clam chowder samples!   Pelicans were just hanging out on the wharf and seemed to be completely unaware that humans actually inhabited this space.  The sea lions were "barking" and posing for pics.  And we just enjoyed some time walking along the wharf and taking in the sites, smells and tastes!

From here, it was a short hop to the 17 mile drive which offered spectacular views of Monterey Bay, mavelous homes that are more like small countries, and amazing golf courses like Pebble Beach!  Great stuff around every corner!

The wharf - quaint and cute!

Free clam chowder samples AND
giant ice cream cones

The pelicans really didn't care
that you were only 2 feet from them!
So adorable - sea lions strike a pose!

They love playing in the water and showing off

That's not a beach - just giant sand traps at Spyglass Hills

Lone Cypress - pretty amazing
it just grows on a rock!

Carmel
The town of Carmel may just be my favorite little seaside town thus far!  Something cool and quaint to find around every corner!  After enjoying the infamous 17-mile drive, we soaked in some sun on a white sandy beach sandwiched between the Pacific and Pebble Beach Golf Course.  Then we strolled through the streets enjoying the shops, galleries and sights.  After having a cocktail at Hog's Breath, we rounded out the day with a fantastic dinner at Il Fornaio.

Right on Carmel beach - our dream home.
Our offer of $1 was sadly not accepted.
White sandy beach with
Pebble Beach in the background

Adorable little houses everywhere

Loved this little sign we found in someone's garden!

Drinks at Hog's Breath by the
outdoor fire.  Cozy!!

San Francisco
Two words:  Fog & Hills!!

San Francisco lives inside it's own little weather bubble....it's very strange!  Beautiful and sunny 5 minutes outside the city.....and then you cross over into a thick wall of fog.  In fact, many days you can just watch the fog roll over the hills and into the valley just outside of the city border.  Despite that, SF is a very nice city and I've always loved the look of row houses!!  Luckily we happened to have pure sunshine on Pier 39 - where we enjoyed lunch and the Jimmy Buffet vibes at Wipe-out Bar & Grill and did some shopping.

When they say that SF is defined by its hills.....they weren't kidding!  I'm thinking the cocktails at lunch must have influenced my insane decision for us to hike up to check out Lombard street - the crookedest street in the world....at least it made me feel better about buying a big loaf of Sourdough afterwards (which originated in SF)!

Take a drive with us down Lombard Street:  http://youtu.be/tbCBgLo0_-E

Pier 39 used to have thousands of Sea Lions -
they literally overtook the pier.  For some reason,
the Sea Lions have moved farther north.  They
think it's because their food sources moved, but
regardless of how many were there, it was still fun
to sit and watch them play, sleep and "argue"

The infamous Fisherman's Wharf sign

The pictures don't capture exactly how steep these hills are!!!

Lombard Street

Fog rolling over the hills - the ocean is on the other side

Alcatraz
Whether or not you have a passion for history, visiting Alcatraz is a must if you find yourself near San Francisco.  I'm going to let the pics speak for themselves on this one....

View of SF from the ferry - sunny at Pier 39
Eerie picture of the halls

The warden's house - it burned down after Alcatraz was
closed - Indians were living on the island.

Visiting hours - I don't think I like being locked up.

Is she trying to look mean or sexy?  I'm still not sure.

The outdoor "playground" - trying to look tough so
other inmates won't mess with us!

The cells

14 is my lucky number - but this was "the Hole"
Solitary confinement and total darkness
when the door closed.  And rumors of paranormal
activity in that cell....let me out!

The Rock - fogged in as our ferry pulled up

Sugarland
Friday night we went to see Sugarland in concert at Shoreline Amphitheater - an amazing outdoor concert venue near the bay.  Vonda Shepard opened the show and then handed the stage over to Jennifer and Kristian who charmed us with their talent and love for performing!  We thought it apropos to share this Sugarland song with you as we're out on the road finding our "something more"!
http://youtu.be/Gp5foT32tKM

Beautiful night outside on the lawn at the concert!

Aunt Cath and Dave
We thank them for their generous hospitality!  We've been spoiled by real showers, living space and a TV - it'll be an adjustment to get back into 98 square feet again!  We had a fabulous dinner at La Fondue together and we look forward to visiting them again!

Dinner for 4, but we ate enough for 8
Chocoloate Fondue with a
splash of some highly flammable liquer!
YUM!

It's off to southern California where the following awaits us:
  • Waves crashing in Big Sur
  • Dune Buggy riding in Pismo Beach
  • Walks on the beach in Santa Barbara (T's favorite!)
  • Attending live tapings of 3 shows - including Chelsea Lately, which we're super excited about!

Until the next exit...

98 Square Feet "Wino's and Beach Bumz"

by mpucalik 25. August 2011 17:50

The Happy Campers have been "camped" in northern california for over a week now, and there's been so much activity it's hard to even know what to report on!  But, in true fashion, we'll try to share the fun stuff with plenty of pictures!

Since Amy decided that she needed to clean Aunt Cath's house today, I figured I'd throw a quick blog together.  (btw: for those of you that know anything about Amy, you'll get a kick out of this.  She cleaned 98 square feet last week, and I swear it took her just as long to clean that as it did our 2400 square foot house...I'm not joking!!!)

Redwood National Forest:
Amy was really looking forward to seeing the ol' Redwoods since setting out on this adventure and we're very happy that we took the time to do so!  These trees are simply massive....and they just have this wonderful majestic energy to them.  To look up and know that you are gazing at some of the tallest trees in the world, some of which connect us to the days of dinosaurs, is nothing short of incredible!  We also took a long and windy road to hike through Fern Canyon - along the way we even got to go "off-roading" with the Jeep and drive through a creek...woot woot!  And to top off our stay, we were in a campground on the Klamath River where a grey whale took up residence by swimming up the river with her calf and hasn’t wanted to head back out to the ocean.  Here are some pics to represent:

Amy shows off how big these trees are!
We had to pay our $5 and drive
through the giant redwood!

Look closely - I'm on the left, Amy's on the right
of Paul Bunyan's boots

Elk, just grazing in front of these cabins!

Yes, that's Amy in the tree again.  It's HUGE!

When you look up, it's truly mind-boggling how big they are!

Do I need to caption this one?  I'm guessing
it's a boy tree.

Fern Canyon - such a pretty hike along the creek
Little Miss Jeep takes the creek!

The grey whale in the river - her calf went back out to sea,
but she's still hanging around in the river.  Coast Guard has
been trying to get her back out, but she's not budging yet!

The kids:
My cousin lives here in Norcal and has two little girls, Brittney and Amber.  I've only met them a couple of times, but Brittney couldn't wait to see "cousin Tracy" and proceeded to want to spend every minute with me the entire day! I'd cross my legs, Brittney would uncross them and sit on my lap - it was very cute, and made Oma (grandma) just a little jealous since Brittney claimed to "love me the best"!   LOL!!  And we heard that Brittney cried the entire way home...."I want cousin Tracy"!!  Oh yeah, I know how to work 'em all up, then send 'em home crying!!  But it was a fun day with the slip 'n' slide, hide and seek, and everyone's personal favorite - watching "cousin Tracy" trying to touch her toes while jumping on a trampoline!  Oh my word...this is downright embarrassing.  (I am barely giving consent to post this - so enjoy a good laugh!!!)

Video - Tracy touching toes:  http://youtu.be/X50UpjSSlBU

Cousin Tracy, Brittney and Amber swing in the hammock!

Napa:
Oh how I love me some good California wine!  I've been itching to get back to Napa and it didn't disappoint.  It was great to hit some of my old mainstays - Goosecross, Frog's Leap, etc.  Also found a new winery called Conn Creek where we met some very hospitable "wine lushes" (yes, this is legitimately what the employees call themselves!)  We got there around closing time, so they let us have some fun.  Despite Amy not drinking wine, she managed to get a couple of "nips" into a wine glass for her drinking pleasure!

First stop - Goosecross!
Lunch at V. Suttui

Wouldn't you love to have this in your basement??

Amy doesn't drink wine, but she takes a
cute picture at the winery!

Imagine that - Amy behind the bar with a guy on her! LOL!

Lovin' the Frog's Leap Red Flight!
Andrea (aka Wine Lush!) enjoys
a tasting with me at Conn Creek!

Black Stallion - beautiful winery!

Almost ready to be harvested!  We'll be drinking that soon!

Capitola:
The Beach!!  So many great memories of Capitola beach, Margaritaville, the colorful beach homes - what's not to love!  We hade a great day taking in the sun and then taking in some cocktails and then catching a band on the beach that night.  California summers - you just can't beat 'em!  And our drinks were so colorful - they even came with little plastic giraffe's which Amy named Sunkist and Lightning - I think she may have been a little buzzed!!  But the most amazing thing was THE BIRDS!  OMG, we have never seen anything like this in our lives!  There were literally thousands of birds flying over the water not far from shore.  It was truly spectacular.  Definitely watch the video, it's amazing!!!

There's Sunkist and Lightning!

I always loved these colorful beach houses!

The Birds - my lord, The Birds.  You MUST watch the video
to get the full effect!
http://youtu.be/HkfFf1aihoo

Shoreline Park:
We took a beautiful walk around the Bay, and found a lake that offered kayaking and paddleboarding!  We've always wanted to try both, so we figured, hey, why not?!  At least if we fall in, it won't be 60 degree ocean water!  To our surprise, we weren't half bad.  I only took one minor spill, but I was trying to shove off the shore, so luckily there wasn't much of a splash since the water was only a foot deep.  We got some good video, so be sure to check it out!  And we highly recommend giving paddleboarding a try - it was fun, and a great arm workout!

Tracy - slow and steady!
Watch video:  http://youtu.be/c6CP5ZXOvB4

Amy - nice matching outfit with the provided life vest!
Watch the video:  http://youtu.be/OqKf0fLAfgA

There's been so much more, but these are the highlights for now.  Next up is a yummy meal at La Fondue with Aunt Cath and Dave, pride festival in San Jose, Alcatraz and Pier 39 in San Fran, Carmel's beautiful 17 mile drive, more beach time in Monterey, SugarLand concert, and the much anticipated Michael Jackson flash mob that I plan to be a part of on 8/28.  Amy practically wets her pants everytime she sees me practice my moves!!  But being in a flash mob was on my "must do" list for this trip - so I can't let the opportunity pass me by!  Yes, there will be video, and I encourage laughter!

Until the next exit...

Playin' & Stayin' down the Pacific Coast Highway!

Greetings from sunny California - where we are happily taking a day off to relax and catch up on some laundry!!!  After 12 hours of driving in one day (mostly down the Pacific Coast Highway), we rolled into the San Francisco area.  We will be staying with Tracy’s Aunt Cathy for a bit as we explore some wonderful local sites.  Trace has her nose in a book right now, so I thought I'd catch y’all up on some of our recent travels!  We hope this post finds you well and that you have enjoyed hitting the open road with us :)

Glacier National Park:
While T loved Yellowstone b/c of all the wildlife, I fell in love with Glacier National!  The beauty of the snow-capped mountains emerging from the lush green forest was breathtaking.  Not to mention there was some form of water - creek, river, lake, waterfall, etc - around every turn and it was the clearest water ever and the rocks were so colorful!  We took the infamous "Going to the Sun" drive through the park and it certainly did NOT disappoint!

Clear glacier water
Pretty waterfalls around every corner

Rushing water is so beautiful

Loved the colorful rocks on the river bank

Enjoying a cool bridge over the river
Arch tunnel through the rock

Waterfall streams down and right under the road
"Wall of water" splashes onto road

Snow-capped mountains command the sky

Washington State:
While we didn't spend too long in Washington, we had a fantastic time catching up with our friend Jennifer over dinner...hadn't seen her in 5+ years and it was an evening of laughs!

Crappy waiter - but good food and
good company!
Loved seeing the ocean again, but
it was a bit brisk near the water!

Portland, Oregon:
Our trip to Portland was like old home week for Tracy who got to see many of her former colleagues at Nike!  A visit to Headquarters allowed me to see why she always loved coming out here for business trips...what an inspiring place to work!  The campus was crawling with employees taking advantage of the countless opportunities Nike gives them to be active during their day at work:

multiple soccer fields * lap pools * climbing wall * spinning room * yoga
weights & cardio room * beach volleyball * tee box & putting green * biking/running trails (and they supply the bikes!)...and so much more!

A stroll through the city to see some sights and then an AMAZING dinner at 3 Doors Down with her friend Mark was the perfect way to end a very nice visit in this area...despite not having any Malibu in the house!

Mia Hamm building - I had to stand here
just to show how huge this picture was!

Pele - King of my favorite sport
C'mon in, the water's fine!  Nice view, too!

Mini-cupcake break in the city

Oregon Coast:
Stunning!  I have always felt incredibly lucky to live in a state with a beautiful coast.....but I have to say, Oregon may have Maine topped on this one!  Leisurely traveling down 101, we stopped and enjoyed various sites and activities – including Sea Lion Cave which was really cool, but the highlight was probably sandboarding in the dunes (check out our videos - yes, you can laugh out loud - we did)!!   We even got to stay in 2 campgrounds that were just steps from the beach :)

Catchin' some good sand!
http://youtu.be/XL-Uf8BKqFE

http://youtu.be/jHHGeyC0xRw

We actually took an elevator down
to the cave!
They were cute, very vocal, and super stinky!  But fun to
watch the ones playing in the water.
Beautiful sea stacks
The waves here remind me of fireworks

Sunset over the ocean from our campground

From Oregon, we crossed into Cali and visited the amazing Redwood National Forest.....we'll share that adventure in our next post!

Until the next exit...

98 Square Feet Measures Up With Funny Trip Stats!

Trip Stats with a side of humor!

We made it!  We've officially driven from coast to coast....and are thrilled to see our pal the ocean again!  Our adventure is FAR from over though....we visited a good friend up in Bellingham, WA and are now in Portland, OR exploring the area and saying hello to some of Tracy's former co-workers at Nike.  From here, we will trek on down the entire west coast and then spin 98 square feet due east and hit the pedal, exploring the southern part of the US on the way back!
Having made it "half way", we thought this may be an excellent time to share some current trip stats with you all!  We hope you enjoy!

# of days since we departed:  38
Total miles driven:  5,580 (Tracy driving about 5,579 of those -- well, that's a bit exaggerated, but trust us - Amy's driving is NOT the best!!)
Gallons of gas purchased:  444
Average miles per gallon:  12.34 (who knew pulling your house was so expensive!!)
Average price per gallon:  $3.74
How many times we’ve stopped for gas:  40 - we've come to love gas station bathrooms!

# of states our tires have graced: 17
# of nights we’ve boondocked:  7 (most exciting one was in a remote field in Bighorn National Forest with views of snow-capped mountains - see pic!)  For those of you who don't know what "boondocking" is...it's basically dry camping in a parking lot or other location with no water/electricity/sewer hook-ups.  Every town has different boondocking rules and it can often be a challenge to find a place....but we're getting good!  Walmart and casinos are popular!!

# of National Parks/Monuments visited:  6 – Badlands, Mt Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons & Glacier….also saw Mt Rainier & Mount St. Helen's from a distance!
# of unique wildlife sightings (that we don’t see on a regular basis in Maine):  15 - super cute were the mountain goat mama and baby in Glacier National Park

# of rainy days:  2 days….most of the rain we've encountered has been in the form of massive thunderstorms at night!!  We've been very lucky to have such a wonderful summer!!
Highest temperature encountered:  108 (Badlands, SD)

Lowest temperature encountered:  34 (@ night in Yellowstone - thank you for the awesome sleeping bag, Roger!)
# of states we’ve checked off in the good ‘ol license plate game:  All 51 - And we're starting over to make the trip back!
How many pairs of shoes we brought:  33....Oh my word, what were we thinking???
How many pairs we’ve actually used:  12…..with 6 of them being flip-flops!
# of random shoes seen on the side of the road:  10….how do people lose a shoe on the interstate??
# of campers we’ve owned:  2 - LOL!
# of arguments:  hmm……how many times have we hooked & unhooked the camper – LOL?  Although it's going MUCH smoother now that we've realized we were doing the wrong jobs - Tracy should be directing and Amy should be driving.  Only took us to MT to figure this out!!
# of countries with people reading our blog:  10
Total blog hits thus far:  1,401
# of hair ties & chapsticks we brought (since they seem to be EVERYWHERE):  The picture tells all!

Well, that's it for now.  More fun stuff to come and we'll update some stats as we get further along in the trip.

Until the next exit...

Say Cheese! More pics from Yellowstone

The Happy Campers had a slight bump in the road today.  Instead of being in Glacier Park, we're spending the day in Missoula, MT taking care of some mechanical issues.
  1. RV in the shop to fix an electrical issue with some reading lights
  2. Little Miss Jeep took a rock to the head and came up a bit "cracked" - so she had to be doctored up by Todd, the glass repairman. (super nice guy, btw!)
  3. Little Miss Jeep also decided she was in a disco mood and that all indicator lights should be intermittently blinking. Missoula dealership had all parts on hand, so she's almost as good as new!
With time to kill and so many more great pics and experiences from Yellowstone, we decided to take advantage of a rockin' workspace here at the dealership and make another picture post.

NOTE 1:  One blog update - we now have a working email notification system for the blog.  If you'd like to be notified via email when we make a new post, just put your email in to the right!

NOTE 2:  We also updated our comment section so anyone can comment - you don't have to have a special google account.  So peeps - comment away!

Here are the pics....

Coyote looks for squirrels & mice!

This buffalo was in our camp - literally 25 yards from our camper

Yellow-bellied Marmot.  He was so cute just watching us as we hiked by!

Amy lives through a hike (no bears got her!)
Storm Point - it was so pretty out there!

Not very reassuring before you head out on a hike into the wilderness!!

Left = Alaska.  Right = Maine.  Same car....weird!!
View of Upper Falls after a strenuous hike
via Uncle Tom's Trail

Female Big Horn sheep and babies on the mountain side.  So cute!
Petrified Tree....really?  We drove
40 miles round trip for THAT?!?!?

Bear Jam - Grizzlies around the corner!
Next time we'll break out our guitars for the "Jam"
Grizzly Mama and her cub.  They were tough to photograph,
but really amazing to see in the wild!

Aren't these supposed to be in the air and not on a train track??
Saw this driving through Montana....it needs some wings!
Our idea of lunch these days!  A whole new
meaning to lunch break.

Really great pic of a herd of Elk.  So graceful and pretty.

Bonus pic:  This is how the goose was introduced into our lives.
Tracy enjoying a beautiful view.
Goose rolls up in a pink carriage.
Tracy looks over and thinks:  WTF?
Amy - always ready with the camera gets the shot!

98 Square Feet "Ducks, Bears, and Buffalo Oh My"

by mpucalik 3. August 2011 19:06

Pictures, Pictures, Pictures!

We're in Yellowstone this week and we have no cell or internet service - so driving through Grand Tetons today, we came across a Discovery Center with wireless, so we're whipping out a quick blog that's all about the pictures!  Or as many as we can get loaded before it's time to hit the road!  Hope you enjoy!  The last week has been AMAZING on the road....here are some pics to represent:

BEAR COUNTRY U.S.A - Rapid City, SD This was a drive through wild animal park with everything from Artic Wolves to Mountain Lions to yes, BEARS!  Really cool.

Baby Bear getting some lunch

Baby Bear climbs a tree!

Black Bear strikes a pose!

NEEDLES ROAD - Black Hills, SD.  Cool drive through rock formations that were literally just slits in the rocks.

Great photo op - Tracy couldn't climb that high in her flip-flops!
Heading in - the Jeep fit!

BUFFALO HERD - Custer State Park.  This was so unbelievable!  Literally we drove right into a massive herd of buffalo that were all around the road!

Mama and Baby - 15 feet from car!
The herd....cars were literally at a stand still

DEVIL'S TOWER - Middle of nowhere, Wyoming!!  This is where Close Encounters was filmed, and we must admit, it was pretty frickin' neat and worth the drive!  TRIVIA - Devil's Tower was actually underground millions of years ago, and erosion exposed it!  So bizarre!!

Aliens did not swoop down and take us away!

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK - Wyoming.  So many things to share about this place - on our first day we saw Geysers, Waterfalls, snow in the mountains, an Eagle, Elk, beautiful Yellowstone Lake (TRIVIA:  it was frozen until June 16!!) a Wolf pack with cubs, Bison - and the best of all...a pet Goose being strolled in a baby carriage!  OMG - we have never laughed so hard!  Luckily Amy snapped a photo b/c it's worth remembering (and sharing!)  For now, here are some of the highlights:

Beautiful Bubbling, Boiling Hot Geyser
Amy slides down the snow on the way into Yellowstone

Stop at a Waterfall

Amy soaks up the sun on the edge of a rock above the falls!

Amy's an expert at teetering the camera on a rock to get our picture!

Old Faithful erupts!

Grandma, Mom and Baby Elk graze by the water!

Raging Waters of Upper Falls

Grand Teton and the Snake River
(TRIVIA:  Grand Teton is 13,770 feet tall)

Oh yes, this lady was dead serious about her pet Goose.
Please note:  pink carriage, leash, and she's toting a GUN!
Best of all, she told her husband while trying to take the photo,
they could photo shop out her hands later for the perfect picture!!
It truly does take all kinds!!!

Ok peeps, that's all us Happy Campers have for now!  Needless to say, we've got TONS of photos and good memories and we're only 30 days in!  Next up - a quick trip to Glacier National Park, and then it's off to the Northwest where we are so anxious to see out best friend....the OCEAN!!

Until the next exit...

98 Square Feet Puts the "Bad" in the Badlands

South Dakota - who knew??

Wow, a lot has transpired with us Happy Campers since last we blogged.  Now that we're out on the open road with no family visits planned for a while, we've realized we'll have a LOT more pictures to share (we took 175 just yesterday!!).  Since blogs have a limited loading capacity - we'll figure out a way to share more pics via shutterfly or flickr or something like that very soon!

In the meantime - here's what's been happening with us.  We hope you enjoy....

First, we visited T's brother, sister-in-law and nephew in Minnesota.  We had a great family visit and got to see Devin in a swim meet and play lots of baseball.  Also got to see them awarded the first place trophy for Edina little league.  Great job Coach Palm (T's brother) and Devin

Next, a stop at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota on our way to the Badlands.  Ok, we stopped here b/c we thought it would be a kooky place to see, but it ended up being very cool and we were fascinated that the outside is completely covered in corn!

For you trivia buffs:  This place was constructed in 1892 and is re-done each year to the tune of $130k in corn cobs which make these amazing murals!  Craziness!   And we couldn't resist a picture with our faces in the corn cobs....total tourists, or what?!?!?!

There are many more amazing pics of the corn palace - so we'll be sure to let you know when we find a place to post them if you're interested in taking a look!

Then it was The Badlands

Yes, they were bad...as in bad-ass!  All we saw was corn, moo-moo's and hay (or as Amy likes to say...haaaaay) for endless miles in South Dakota.  Then you head into the Badlands and you can't believe you're in the same country, let alone the same state.  Unfortunately it was 108 degrees the day we drove through, so we didn't get to do much except stop and take pics, but it was an amazing drive!  And yes, Amy did get out of the car despite the Rattlesnake warnings!  Pics do not do this place justice!

Then we drove up to Black Hills National Forest where we're staying for 3 nights, and it's like a whole OTHER world in South Dakota.  It's so weird how many different looks this state has!  It's beautiful in the Hills - here are a few pics pieced together of us at Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Prairie Dog Nation, and hitting the Alpine Slide:

And last, but definitely not least for tonight, was our drive through Custer State Park.  Ok, all I (Tracy) wanted was to see a heard of buffalo, but instead, we had the best time of all feeding wild (not sure on the "wild" part!!) jackasses on the side of the road.  It was totally cool, and we were glad we had a half eaten apple and a box of crackers in the car.  So much fun, and something we'll always remember - and probably laugh about.  By the way....no buffalo!  But here we are, feeding our "asses".   And yes, Amy and I have not officially converted to "campers"....we're still wearing skirts and taking showers!!

There's so much more to see here, and we're going to try to cram it all in today.  We leave the Black Hills tomorrow and head towards Wyoming where we'll be visiting Devil's Tower (Close Encounters was filmed there) and Yellowstone National Park for 4 days.  Tracy wants to see every animal species known to man - including bears, wolf packs, buffalo, etc.  Amy's interested, but is still not convinced that a bear can't open our camper door.  I told her they would at least knock first.  It is Yellowstone National Park - I would expect the wildlife to be polite!  LOL!

Until the next exit....

Amy & Tracy

ps: We also made a guest intern appearance at Jelly Shot Test Kitchen while in Minnesota.  As many of you know, Tracy's sister-in-law, Michelle, is the creator of the delightful treats that we've shared with many of you.  She's the master, and we learned a lot.  We'll keep you posted if our variation of a Rum Punch makes her blog.  Here we are at JSTK

Surprise - Splash - Boom

SURPRISE!! Yes, somehow, we managed to pull off a surprise b-day party for Sandie (T's mom) on Saturday night!

We had lots of fun planning it and we're still surprised ourselves that we actually pulled it off!

I think it was determined that she was either legitimately surprised, or scared sh*tless!  Regarless, it was a great night, and here are some pics of the festivities...Happy B-Day Mom!

SPLASH DOWN!

Then it was off to the Wisconsin Dells to pay a visit to the largest Water Park in America for a couple of days - Noah's Ark!  Some of the highlights:

1) Yes, when they say heavier person in the back of the 2-person raft, there IS a reason!   We decided to test the rule.....and Tracy actually BEAT the raft down the slide - ass over tea kettle - which made for a memorable moment!

2) We loved the Black Anaconda - the longest watercoaster in the US!!  Just like a regular rollercoaster, this water ride had exciting climbs, dips, twists & turns!  After the first plunge and mouthful of water, we quickly learned to keep our mouths closed!

3) Thunder & Lightning storms LOVE us!  The very first night we ever slept in camper #1, we experienced one hell of a Maine light show!  While boondocking at Ho Chunk Casino Sunday, we rung in night 1 in camper #2 with another humdinger of a storm!  Amy almost made us run 200 yards inside in the pouring rain & hail at 3:30am b/c she was convinced a tornado was coming!

4) The whistle to signify that the waves are starting in the Wave pool was pretty much like a cattle call for every child in the park to come running...they ran in....we ran to our chairs!

5) We came upon a mini zip-line that brings you out over a pool to drop into.  Looked like fun!!  We quickly realized why there was no one over the age of 12 in line...carrying your own weight 30 feet down a zip-line is much harder than it looks!

6) Marley's restaurant was a bonus find with a Key West vibe....we enjoyed a nice night on the patio under a cabana eating good food and listening to acoustic music - right up our alley!

Basically, the Wisconsin Dells was a big hit....we loved it, and with all the great activities, there's a good chance we might be back!

We're in Minnesota visiting Tracy's brother, sister-in-law and nephew for a few days.  Looks like there's a lot of baseball, baseball, and more baseball on the agenda....GO DEVIN!   We just got done practicing our rendition of Sweet Caroline for the 4th inning stretch during Devin's games....he sang along with us, right up to the point he realized we may actually do this at his games this week!!!

Off to South Dakota and the Badlands in a few days.

Until the next exit...

Chicago...and all that Jazz

Chicago - one of my favorite musicals and now one of my favorite cities!  Beautiful architecture, theater, countless restaurants & bars, wonderful parks with fountains/outdoor art & amphitheaters, a fun pier, beach with soft white sand, aquarium/planetarium/zoo/museums and a great walking/biking path along Lake Michigan.....this city has everything you could want!

After arriving by train, we checked into our amazing hotel room....BIG thanks go out to T's cousin, Sarah, who extended her friends & family discount!!  Our top (32nd) floor, corner room charmed us with heated bathroom floors (personal fave!), a bed I never wanted to leave & a shower larger than our entire camper! Just a couple pics to share our amazing views....that's Lake Michigan in the background of the pic on the right.

Embracing our tight "nomad" travel budget, we walked....and walked.....and walked for a full day of sight-seeing!  Some highlights:

Ever stood 103 floors up on just a piece of glass with the city below you?  A pretty wild experience!  The Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) now has glass boxes that protrude from the side of the tower to allure guests to the top!

A shout out to Renee....our fantastic server at Weber's Grill....who promised to come up with a creative name for our little home on wheels :)

We're back on the road tomorrow - off to tempt our youthful sides at Noah's Ark Water Park in Wisconsin Dells, WI.   Please note:  We will NOT be posting any bathing suit pictures considering all the amazing food we've consumed on this leg of the adventure!

Until the next exit....

98 Square Feet Visit to Campers Inn Elkhart!

by mpucalik 3. August 2011 18:58

129 is the new 98

Ok, a lot has happened since we left Hershey Park.

First...PA and OH should have gold plated highways since they charged us $25 each just to drive on them.  I'm pretty sure we didn't see anything except a cool tunnel in PA worth any kind of money!

Then we dropped off 98 square feet at a dealer to fix a water leak, a fridge issue, and a whole slew of other minor things that us "non-campers" needed help with.  Long story short (ie: this is the REALLY short version) - we left with a brand new camper!  So she's no longer 98 square feet, she's now 129 square feet (but we're keeping our blog name!)  Definitely an upgrade with hardwood floors (ok, it's laminate)  and best of all - our bedroom is no longer also our living room and dining room!  We'll post some new pictures soon!  Needless to say, it's been a disaster b/c we literally had to throw 98 into 129 and hit the road after being there for 9 hours!

BIG SHOUT OUT to Camper's Inn @ Elkhart, Indiana!  This team rocks!  Amy and I have never been so impressed with the people and level of service!  They were amazing!  And, we're now featured bloggers for them!  Going to be so much fun as we continue our adventure!

We made it to Tracy's moms house in Hennepin, IL - and have been enjoying her company!  Does everyone know Tracy's hometown only has 500 people and is surrounded by corn fields?!?!?  But, they whoop it up for the 4th and have a big Bag-O tourney, so we think we might enter to try to win some money for the road off the locals!!

We head to Chicago on Wednesday - we're excited to eat a deep dish pizza and have a drink at Mother's (anyone else love the movie About Last Night?)!  Thanks to our cousin, Sarah, for setting us up with a great room in Chi-town at the Sofitel on Michigan Ave - can't wait for breakfast in bed!!

Until the next exit....
